Our Story: Black infant mortality, Butler County

Over the years, Toni and Lauren have noticed that a significant number of their pregnant patients truly do not understand the significant impact their pregnancies have on their relationships, mental health, and overall well being. During one-on-one time with their patients, several individuals have voiced concerns about lacking knowledge about childbirth preparation, birthing options and readiness for the additional responsibilities of motherhood. Despite many patients having access to childbirth education, hospital-based programs often lack cultural competence. This deficiency often leads to mistrust, low show rates, and poorer outcomes for African American patients and their babies.

Uzima Rejuvenation Station, under the fiscal sponsorship of Nyni Inc, throuh a $400,000 grant from the Bethesda Foundation, Bi3;  has created a program that applies a comprehensive approach to holistically guide pregnant African American people of Butler County Ohio through culturally linguistic educational sessions for childbirth education, life, relationships and breastfeeding, coupled with self care services.
